Senior Vice President of PGA's Tasmanian Branch Helen O’Byrne joined the Tasmanian Premier, Hon Jeremy Rockliff MP, and the Minister for Health, Hon Bridget Archer MP, to make the announcment - saying it was exciting to see expanded scope services delivering much needed care for patients.
“We are proud to have delivered 10,000 UTI services through Tasmanian community pharmacies since 2024," Ms O'Byrne said.
What this means is Tasmanian patients have been able to access more affordable and accessible healthcare, closer to where they live.

“This service is just the beginning and shows exactly how expanding pharmacists scope of practice can make a real difference in our healthcare system.
“As a profession, we can’t wait to get on with doing even more next year after the first round of Tasmanian pharmacists have completed their training," she said.
Safe, supportive options
Ms O’Byrne also noted the PGA was delighted with the Government’s recent commitment to authorise appropriately trained pharmacists to initiate and supply hormonal contraception.
“It is so important for women to have as many safe and supportive options as possible to manage their healthcare needs, including contraception," she said.
“Community pharmacies in Tasmania are keen to train up, step up, and deliver more services for their patients.
“The reforms the Government has committed to will help meet the challenges in our health system, and we thank them again for their support.”
