On World Pharmacists Day 2025, the head of PGA has joined some of Australia's top politicians to honour and celebrate the invaluable role community pharmacists play in keeping Australia's communities healthy.
"From metropolitan centres to regional towns and remote communities, you remain trusted, accessible, and ever-ready to help when patients need care," PGA's National President Professor Trent Twomey said.
"This year’s theme is Think Health, Think Pharmacy First, expresses the journey we are on — to elevate the understanding of how community pharmacy underpins and enriches Australia’s healthcare system.
"Pharmacists are consistently recognised as some of the most trusted and accessible health professionals; yet too many Australians are still unaware of the ever-expanding range of services now offered in their local pharmacy," Prof Twomey said.
A recent YouGov survey found:
- 82 percent of Australians visit a pharmacy regularly
- 84 percent trust the medical advice they receive
- Nearly half are unaware pharmacists can now provide prescription medicines, issue medical certificates for short-term illness, or treat common conditions such as urinary tract infections (UTIs)*
Awareness, opportunities and our purpose
Prof Twomey said this awareness gap presents a tremendous opportunity.
"Community pharmacy is on the threshold of transformation — a shift which is both vital and ambitious, and one the profession is uniquely positioned to lead.
"Our purpose remains steadfast – it is to create healthier communities," he said.
The Pharmacy Guild of Australia said across Australia, governments, universities, and the Australasian College of Pharmacy are expanding training programs and piloting new services.
These efforts are laying the foundations for a future where pharmacy is recognised not just as a pillar of healthcare, but as a force for innovation and enhanced access to care.
"To mark this day, we have produced from Australia a special video featuring messages of gratitude and support from Australia’s lawmaking leaders — including the Honourable Anthony Albanese MP, Prime Minister of Australia; the Honourable Sussan Ley MP, Leader of the Opposition; and the Honourable Chris Minns MP, Premier of New South Wales — among others.
"Their words reflect the deep respect governments and communities hold for your tremendous service," he said.
"On behalf of PGA and in my capacity as PGA’s head, I extend my sincere thanks for your professionalism, compassion, and daily commitment to patient care.
"I encourage you to take a moment today to thank your team, celebrate your successes, and share this recognition of the extraordinary difference you make in lives every single day.
"Thank you, again, for everything you do."
