The enhanced access pilot is set to improve healthcare access across the state, particularly in areas where access to general practitioners is limited.
The announcement was made by Western Australia’s Health Minister, the Hon Meredith Hammat, MLA, during her opening address.
Minister Hammat said the conditions included asthma, allergic and non-allergic rhinitis, mild musculoskeletal pain, hormonal contraception, weight-loss support, and oral health assessments, among others.
Pharmacy Guild of Australia WA Branch President, Andrew Ngeow, welcomed the announcement.
“We thank Minister Hammat and the Western Australia Government for their strong commitment to enhancing our population’s access to timely, safe and affordable health care through the statewide network of community pharmacies,” he said.
The community access pilot is on track to launch in late 2026, with the first cohort of participating pharmacists beginning their accredited university training programs in September 2025.
An AUD1.26 million commitment in the 2025-to-2026 state budget will support pharmacist training, including additional subsidies for pharmacists in rural and remote areas.
Mr Ngeow said increasing access to primary health care services was a shared goal.
“The Guild’s WA Branch looks forward to continuing to work with Minister Hammat and the WA Government on the implementation of the Enhanced Access Community Pharmacy Pilot.”
Mr Ngeow said interest from pharmacists had already exceeded available training places.
“Community pharmacy, as a sector, looks forward to being able to deliver a broader range of services into the future, in every metropolitan and regional area of Western Australia.”
